Managing Diabetes: 8 Summer Fruits That Help Regulate Blood Sugar

Posted on March 25, 2025

Last Updated:March 25, 2025, 17:18 IST

Diabetes is a disorder where the body struggles to control blood sugar levels due to a lack of insulin or its reduced effectiveness.

Diabetics should choose fruits with a low glycemic load (GL), which factors in portion size and is more useful than glycemic index (GI) for blood sugar control.

Diabetes is a condition in which the body has difficulty regulating blood sugar due to insufficient or ineffective insulin. If left unmanaged, it can lead to serious health complications. The three primary types are Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes. However, with a healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, and appropriate treatment, it can be effectively controlled.

Many diabetics are concerned about their sugar intake and often consider eliminating fruits from their diet. Yet, as summer arrives, the temptation to enjoy sweet mangoes, hydrating watermelons, and other seasonal fruits becomes strong. So, is it necessary for diabetics to completely avoid fruits, or can they be enjoyed in moderation?

As reported by the Indian Express, Meenu Balaji, Chief Nutritionist at Pragmatic Nutrition, emphasises that portion control and consumption methods are key. She advises that eating whole fruits in moderation is generally safe, but fruit juices and smoothies should be avoided due to their high sugar concentration.

For diabetics, choosing fruits with a low glycemic load (GL) is key. While the glycemic index (GI) measures how quickly a food raises blood sugar, glycemic load considers both the GI and the portion size, making it a more practical indicator for blood sugar management.

Here are eight summer fruits that are safe for diabetics.

Watermelon

Despite its high glycemic index, watermelon has a low glycemic load of just 5 per 120g serving. Enjoy a cup of fresh watermelon slices or mix them into a refreshing salad with feta cheese, walnuts, mint, and a drizzle of lemon juice.

Kiwi

Packed with fiber and vitamin C, kiwi is a great choice for diabetics. It helps regulate blood sugar and boosts immunity.

Papaya

Rich in beta-carotene, vitamin C, folate, and potassium, papaya is a digestive-friendly fruit. It contains the enzyme pepsin, which aids in breaking down proteins.

Guava

This fiber-rich fruit is loaded with vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, and is known for aiding digestion and relieving constipation.

Plums

With a low glycemic index and high fiber content, plums help maintain stable blood sugar levels and improve digestion.

Oranges

In addition to being a fantastic source of vitamin C, oranges are packed with potassium, which plays a key role in managing blood pressure.

Jamun (Indian Blackberry)

This fruit is highly recommended for diabetics as it contains powerful antioxidants and is known for its ability to lower blood sugar levels. Jamun seeds are particularly beneficial in diabetes management.

Grapes

Grapes are full of antioxidants and polyphenols, which help regulate insulin levels and support overall health. However, portion control is essential.

How Can You Prevent Diabetes?

While autoimmune and genetic forms of diabetes cannot be prevented, there are ways to reduce the risk of developing prediabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Here are some effective steps to lower your chances:

  • Follow a nutritious diet – Opt for balanced meals, such as the Mediterranean diet, rich in whole foods.
  • Stay active – Engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity, five days a week.
  • Maintain a healthy weight – Work towards an optimal weight that suits your body and overall well-being.
  • Manage stress levels – Practice relaxation techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga.
  • Limit alcohol consumption – Drink in moderation to avoid negative effects on blood sugar levels.
  • Prioritise good sleep – Aim for 7 to 9 hours of rest and seek help for sleep disorders if needed.
  • Quit smoking – Eliminating tobacco use improves overall health and lowers diabetes risk.
  • Follow medical advice – Take prescribed medications to manage heart disease risk factors effectively.
