When you think of Ektaa Kapoor, you don’t just think of one genre. You think of drama, thrill, chaos, emotion, rebellion, and sometimes, all of it in the same week. Over the last three decades, she’s built a content empire so diverse, it’s hard to believe it all came from one banner, Balaji Telefilms.
As she turns 50 tomorrow, here are some examples that prove Brand Ektaa Kapoor isn’t defined by one format, it’s powered by fearless storytelling across them all.
1. The Grand Era of Indian Soap Operas
From Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi to Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, Ektaa redefined Indian TV — creating characters and catchphrases that became part of everyday life. These shows weren’t just popular — they shaped popular culture.
2 Content Driven Films
With Lootera, Udta Punjab, Laila Majnu, Ektaa showed her range wasn’t limited to high drama. She went on to produce films that were poetic, full of drama and what not. Very Few producers would dare back something like Udta Punjab, a hard-hitting look at drug abuse in Punjab. But Ektaa did, even when it meant taking on the censors. It paid off, both critically and culturally.
3. Unapologetic Feminist Voices
Films like The Dirty Picture, Lipstick Under My Burkha and shows like The Married Woman gave Indian women something rare: a voice that didn’t care to be polite. These weren’t token stories, they were layered, political, and honest.
4. The Sex-Positive Disruptor
Years before bold storytelling became a streaming trend, Love Sex Aur Dhokha pushed boundaries on voyeurism, sex, and shame. Experimental in form, explosive in theme, and very, very Ektaa.
5. Women Centric Commercial Films
Veere Di Wedding, The Crew, Thank You For Coming, Ektaa brought gloss, humour, and female friendship into the mainstream without moralising. These were women talking sex, money, and mess, on their own terms.
6.. Supernatural & Thrill-Filled Universes
From Naagin to Kahiin Kissi Roz & Krishna Cottage, she created her own genre of dramatic supernatural thrillers. They were campy, chaotic, and completely addictive, and they found massive fan bases across the country.
7. The Gritty Commercial Blockbusters
With films like Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and Shootout at Wadala, Ektaa revived the big, brash gangster genre, complete with stylised violence, strong characters, and pitch-perfect dialoguebaazi.
