Investors have reacted to a surge in trade protectionism — particularly the United States’ surprise announcement of new tariffs on Canada and the European Union — by shifting out of risk assets such as crypto and equities, and into traditional safe havens. Gold has climbed to consecutive all-time highs, while bond markets have seen renewed interest.
Crypto assets have mirrored the global equity markets, with widespread sell-offs, weakened demand, and a move into correction territory. Bitcoin (BTC), the market’s flagship digital asset, experienced one of its steepest single-day declines since the 2020 COVID-19 crash, dropping nearly 15% following the tariff announcement in February. Ethereum (ETH) also saw a surge in volatility, with its one-month implied volatility climbing above 100%, more than double its prior range.

This recent turbulence highlights the increasing linkage between digital assets and traditional financial markets. Bitcoin’s correlation with equities has grown stronger during this risk-off phase, while its correlation with traditional hedges like gold has also risen. Ongoing institutional adoption, maturing regulatory environments, and expanding real-world use cases — including cross-border payments and decentralized finance (DeFi) — are contributing to the crypto market’s resilience.If macroeconomic conditions stabilize or new narratives around digital assets emerge, crypto could once again find momentum as a long-term hedge. Until then, the market may remain range-bound and highly reactive to global developments. Investors are advised to stay diversified and be ready to respond to potential opportunities arising from market dislocations.
