The 2021 Telugu blockbuster Pushpa: The Rise not only elevated Allu Arjun to superstardom but also drew attention to the formidable performance of Fahadh Faasil as the menacing antagonist SP Bhanwar Singh Shekawat. Fahadh’s portrayal of the sinister cop added layers of intrigue to the film, earning him widespread acclaim. However, despite the global success of Pushpa, Fahadh Faasil remains grounded about its impact on his career.
In a candid interview with Film Companion, the acclaimed Malayalam actor revealed his perspective on the aftermath of Pushpa and its influence on his career trajectory. When asked if the film had propelled him to pan-Indian stardom, Fahadh responded with characteristic honesty, stating that Pushpa hadn’t significantly altered his career landscape.
“I don’t think Pushpa did anything for me,” Fahadh admitted frankly. He further said, “I tell Sukumar sir that. I don’t have to hide it. I have to be honest. I am doing my stuff here. No disrespect to anything. People expect magic from me after Pushpa… no. It’s pure collaboration and love for Sukumar Sir. My stuff is here (Malayalam cinema). Very clearly, my stuff is here. That’s one.”
Contrary to the notion of emerging as a pan-Indian star, Fahadh expressed humility and emphasized his commitment to his craft within the Malayalam industry. He highlighted the exceptional talents of actors like Vicky Kaushal, Rajkumar Rao, and Ranbir Kapoor, acknowledging their contributions to Indian cinema.
Fahadh also said that he was happy to see many non-Malayali families following Malayalam cinema and said, “So, that is very exciting. For me, I don’t believe that Pushpa would change me or it would take me to another… No, I don’t believe that.”
Despite occasional interactions with industry stalwarts like Karan Johar, Vicky Kaushal, and Rajkumar Rao, Fahadh says he remains firmly rooted in his identity as a Malayalam actor. He said, “I like that pan-India. I love that bonding. Nothing beyond that.”
