Tech giant Google is set to build a massive 1 gigawatt (GW) data centre and its supporting energy infrastructure in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with a total investment of $6 billion (approximately Rs 51,000 crore). This marks Google’s largest-ever data centre project in India and is expected to be one of the biggest in Asia in terms of both scale and investment.
According to government sources cited by Reuters, nearly $2 billion (about Rs 17,000 crore) of the total outlay will go toward establishing renewable energy capacity. These clean energy sources will be used to power the high-capacity data centre, reflecting Google’s global push towards sustainable infrastructure.
“This will be Google’s first and largest investment of this kind in India so far,” the sources said, highlighting the strategic importance of the project.
The data centre, once operational, will join the league of “hyperscale” facilities, massive server farms like those operated by Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, that support everything from cloud computing to AI applications.

The company is also developing large-scale data hubs in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, as part of its ongoing efforts to support growing digital demand across Asia-Pacific.
The Visakhapatnam project underlines the growing strategic importance of India in the global cloud computing and AI ecosystems. It also comes at a time when companies are navigating economic uncertainties and regulatory shifts, including global trade policies under the Trump administration.
What Does A 1 GW Data Centre Mean?
The “1 gigawatt” figure refers to the power usage, not the direct storage capacity. A facility with 1 GW of power draw is classified as a hyperscale centre, capable of housing tens of thousands of servers.
For instance, if the data centre houses 50,000 servers, and each has an average storage of 10 terabytes (TB), it would translate to a total of 5,00,000 TB, or about 500 million gigabytes (GB). Depending on configuration and purpose, actual capacity could vary between 100 million GB and 1 billion GB, enough to store the data of hundreds of millions of users.
