The basic structure of a multilayer PCB is a combination of several different circuit layers that are joined together by conductive via holes. These via holes are barrel shaped vertical traces that allow for connections between multiple layers of the PCB. There are many different types of vias, but the two most common are blind and buried. These vias are essential for a number of reasons: they help with the routing of signals, minimize signal degradation, and enhance overall thermal management.

The difference between a blind and a buried via is that a buried via doesn’t connect with the outer layer of the PCB. Instead, they are used to connect internal layers of the board and are hidden from the outside. As a result, they are an excellent choice for high-density PCB designs.

In order to create a buried via, a hole is drilled through the PCB’s inner layer and into one of its adjacent layers. Once the hole is in place, a filler material is deposited over the opening. The filler is designed to be electrically insulating, and it is important that it has a low impedance in order to keep signal transmissions stable.

Once the filler has been placed, a metallized layer is applied on top of it. This metallized layer provides the necessary resistance to prevent current flow through the holes and prevents EMI (electromagnetic interference). This type of via is a great option for high-density applications because it can help to reduce the number of layers that are required on the PCB while still providing adequate signal and power routing channels.

The main advantage of a buried via is its ability to improve the performance of a PCB by reducing the length of the signal paths, and thus decreasing the risk of signal degradation. It can also reduce the number of layers that are required to achieve a given routing density, and it can provide improved reliability by eliminating unused via sections. However, the manufacturing process of a buried via is much more complicated than a through-hole or a blind via, and this can drive up the cost of the PCB. Nonetheless, the advantages of buried vias can easily offset this added cost. Therefore, if you’re planning to use a buried via, it’s a good idea to budget for the extra costs associated with this type of via.
