“Luxury furniture deserves more than routine upkeep, as each piece is a lasting investment,” says Joya Nandurdikar, Founding Partner, Untitled Design and Furgonomics.
For starters, wooden furniture or items with intricate fabric art are best kept away from windows, balconies, or exterior-facing walls prone to leaks and damp patches. “For furniture with integrated art, ensure paintings and prints are properly framed using acid-free mounts and sealed moisture-barrier frames to prevent damage,” she adds. She also recommends placing silica gel sachets and moisture absorbers inside drawers and cabinets—an easy but effective line of defense against hidden humidity. Natural stone pieces like marble, onyx, or limestone also need attention: wipe them down with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality sealant once a year to maintain their resilience.
Complementing this approach, Anubha Laroiya Aneja, co-founder, HomeGaatha, emphasizes that gentle, natural treatments can go a long way. “Treat your wooden pieces to a layer of beeswax or coconut oil, and make sure to move them slightly away from walls to let them breathe,” she advises.
Upholstered furniture benefits from a gentle vacuum and occasional sun exposure for cushions. Leather pieces, she says, deserve a coat of moisturising balm and should be left uncovered to prevent trapped moisture. To avoid rust on metal items, a simple rub-down with WD-40 does the trick. “By following these simple steps, your home will continue to exude elegance, rain or shine,” she assures.
Adding yet another dimension, Sajal Lamba, co-founder & director, Wriver, underscores what he calls “material mindfulness.”
“During the monsoon, caring for furniture means more than surface cleaning. Each material—wood, metal, textile—responds differently to moisture, so understanding these behaviours is paramount,” he explains.
He advises shifting furniture slightly away from walls to promote airflow and discourages placing rugs under solid wood furniture, as they can trap dampness. Routine airing of storage units and sideboards prevents internal humidity build-up, and Lamba insists on responding intuitively to how furniture is interacting with its environment. “Authentic care is not about mere polishing or covering; it’s about paying attention to your furniture’s silent cues,” he says.
Luxury, after all, is about timelessness and monsoon damage is rarely loud. With a combination of vigilant placement, thoughtful material care, and seasonal attention, your beloved pieces will continue to age gracefully and remain as stunning as the day you brought them home.
