International Women’s Day 2025: Observed on March 8, International Women’s Day is celebrated annually to recognise women’s achievements, raise awareness about gender equality, and promote women’s empowerment. This global event provides a platform to discuss women’s social, economic, cultural, and political accomplishments and campaigns to support their rights.

International Women’s Day 2025: History
The labour movement of the early 20th century, which had its roots in protests against abusive working conditions during the fast industrialisation of the time, gave rise to International Women’s Day.
Important turning points include Clara Zetkin’s 1910 proposal for an International Women’s Day, the first National Woman’s Day in the United States in 1909, the 1908 march of 15,000 women in New York City seeking better rights, and the first commemoration of the holiday in several nations in 1911.
The 1917 Russian women’s strike cemented March 8th as the date for the International Women’s Day. This global event also provided a forum for anti-war demonstrations in the First World War.
As a result, the UN General Assembly started commemorating IWD in 1975 and the day later International Women’s Day was formally recognised by the UN.

More than merely a holiday, International Women’s Day (IWD) serves as a crucial forum for activism, bringing attention to enduring gender disparities and raising voices in favour of equality. It acts as a call to action, reminding us of the work that remains to be done to fully realise women’s rights and promote measures to address problems such as economic inequality, political underrepresentation, and gender-based violence.
IWD promotes international unity among women from various backgrounds. In conclusion, IWD catalyses constructive change in laws, regulations, and social conventions that impact women’s lives.
Despite improvements, there are still major obstacles standing in the way of women’s rights being fully realised worldwide. However, International Women’s Day in 2025 will be a significant occasion to evaluate accomplishments, recognise obstacles, and renew commitment to taking important steps toward a gender-equal future.
