Suriya’s latest film, Kanguva, has been met with a mix of reactions from both critics and audiences. While some viewers have been disappointed, others have lauded the film for its bold concept and stunning visual appeal. In the midst of this divided response, Jyotika, Suriya’s wife, has stepped in to defend the movie, sharing her thoughts in a heartfelt post on Instagram.
Jyotika made it clear that her perspective came from a place of being a cinema lover, not just as the wife of the lead actor. She acknowledged the film’s mixed reception but described Kanguva as “a spectacle in cinema,” emphasizing her belief in the film’s unique qualities. Her main concern was with the negative reviews that emerged on the film’s opening day. Jyotika expressed surprise at the criticism, especially when she compared Kanguva to other big-budget films that often rely on outdated formulas, films that feature clichéd action scenes, double-entendre dialogues, and troubling portrayals of women. She found it unfair that Kanguva was being judged so harshly when it was trying to do something different.
Jyotika pointed out the film’s strengths that were being overlooked. She praised the powerful women-led action sequences in the second half of the film and highlighted the emotional depth of the young boy’s journey, which involves themes of love and betrayal. Frustrated by the narrow focus of the reviews, she questioned why such positive elements were being ignored. She even suggested that the negative feedback felt more like a “group propaganda” than a balanced critique, and it left her wondering if the public should take these opinions seriously at all.
Despite acknowledging the film’s flaws, Jyotika defended the overall effort and ambition behind Kanguva. She admitted that the first half of the film could have been stronger and that the sound design was a bit jarring at times. However, she made the point that imperfections are a natural part of any film, particularly one that pushes boundaries like Kanguva does. For her, the effort to innovate with 3D visuals and new cinematic techniques should be celebrated, not criticized.
Jyotika ended her post with an inspiring message for Suriya and the entire Kanguva team, encouraging them to be proud of their hard work. She reminded them that those offering negative criticism were doing little to help cinema progress. Her words were a powerful endorsement of her husband’s vision to take Indian cinema forward and break new ground.
She also took the opportunity to commend director Vetri Maaran and the rest of the team for their exceptional work, particularly the innovative camera techniques that she said had never been seen before in Tamil cinema. Jyotika’s message was clear: supporting bold, experimental cinema is important, and every filmmaker deserves recognition for their efforts to create something new. For Jyotika, Kanguva is a true cinematic experience, flaws and all, and she is immensely proud of what her husband and his team have achieved.
