Kiran Rao’s quirky comedy-drama, Laapataa Ladies, has made India proud by securing a spot as the country’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars. The news has been met with excitement and celebration by the film’s team.
While the selection has been widely applauded, some critics have questioned why Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light wasn’t chosen. However, actor Sparsh Shrivastava, who plays Deepak Kumar in Laapataa Ladies, remains focused on the positive.
In a recent interview, Shrivastava emphasised the significance of the film’s international recognition. “This is a huge moment for Indian cinema,” he said. “It’s an honour to be representing our country on a global platform.”
The actor recalled the moment he learned about the film’s selection. “I was in my hometown of Agra when my phone started buzzing with calls from friends and the media,” he shared. “It was surreal.”
Shrivastava also acknowledged the debate surrounding the choice of Laapataa Ladies over All We Imagine As Light. While he hasn’t seen the latter film, he praised the casting director, Romil Modi, for his work on both projects. “It’s important to support the film that’s representing us,” he stated.
Laapataa Ladies, set in the fictional state of Nirmal Pradesh in 2001, tells the hilarious story of two brides who get accidentally switched on a train. The film is based on a story by Biplab Goswami and has garnered critical acclaim for its witty script and engaging performances.
