US chipmaker Micron’s ambitious project to set up a semiconductor unit in Gujarat is racing toward completion within a remarkable 12-month timeframe.
The Union Cabinet greenlit the project in June, securing a colossal capital investment of Rs 22,516 crore with 50% fiscal support from the government. The swift pace of progress was evident as the groundbreaking ceremony took place in Sanand, Gujarat, a mere three months after the approval, showcasing the government’s unwavering commitment to advancing India’s technological prowess.
Currently under construction, the ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging) facility is on track to be completed within just 12 months. It will specialise in producing memory and storage products, catering not only to domestic demands but also eyeing a global market through exports.
This significant initiative is poised to create up to 5,000 direct job opportunities and an additional 15,000 indirect jobs over the next five years, presenting a substantial boost to employment prospects. Collaborative efforts between the India Semiconductor Mission, the Government of Gujarat, and the US company aim to train about 10,000 engineers, ensuring a skilled workforce aligned with the industry’s requirements.
Moreover, the project has attracted keen interest from over 30 ancillary industries specialising in gases, chemicals, equipment, substrate manufacturing and related fields, considering establishing their facilities in Gujarat, enriching the region’s technological landscape.
Wednesday marked a critical juncture as agreements were formalised among Micron, India Semiconductor Mission, and the Government of Gujarat to ensure timely project milestones and the facilitation of incentives.
Gurusharan Singh, Senior Vice-President for Micron, expressed gratitude for the steadfast support from both the central and state governments, underscoring their pivotal role in propelling the project forward. Meanwhile, Union Minister for Electronics & IT Ashwini Vaishnaw commended the coordinated efforts between the Gujarat government, the Centre and the industry, reaffirming the government’s dedication to nurturing India’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
