On 25 November 2024, a team of Andhra Pradesh Police visited filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s residence in Hyderabad after he did not appear for questioning in the case about him allegedly posting derogatory online post about Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and his family.
Last week, Ram Gopal Varma, commonly known as RGV, had requested four days to appear before the police. He is accused of “tarnishing” the reputation of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, Information and Technology Minister Nara Lokesh, and others through his online posts.
On 11 November 2024, the police registered a case against Varma following a complaint by local Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Ramalingam. The complaint alleged that RGV made derogatory remarks about Chief Minister Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, other family members, and actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan during the promotional campaign for his film Vyuham late last year. As a result, a case was filed against Varma under Section 336(4) and 353(2) of the BNS Act, as well as under Section 67 of the IT Act, at the Maddipadu police station.
On 13 November 2024, the police issued a notice to the filmmaker, instructing him to report to the investigation officer at the Maddipadu police station. Earlier, RGV had approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court, which rejected his request for interim relief. He had sought temporary orders to be excused from appearing before the investigating officer. When RGV’s lawyer informed the court that the filmmaker was at risk of arrest, the judge reportedly responded by advising him to file for bail.
