Recently, Payal Kapadia created history after she became the first Indian filmmaker to win the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival this year. For the unversed, Payal Kapadia was part of the FTII students who led a protest against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the Chairperson of India’s finest film school.
As a result of her leading the protest, Payal Kapadia had an FIR registered against her, a case which is still ongoing, and was denied scholarships. Recently, after her win at Cannes 2024 for the movie All We Imagine As Light, Gajendra Chauhan spoke about Payal Kapadia and said, “I would just like to say, we are all very proud of her. I’d like to congratulate her for her achievement,” before adding, “Let me tell you, there is a vast difference between being talented and being disciplined. Talent is all very fine but being disciplined is also very important.”
Now, Vijay Varma, who also studied at FTII, has reacted to Gajendra Chauhan’s statement about Payal Kapadia on the stories of his official Instagram account. He reshared a post which quotes Gajendra Chauhan saying that he’s ‘very proud’ of Payal Kapadia and wrote, “Sir ye chup rehne ka time tha,” followed by a giggling emoji. He also included comedian Abhishek Upmanyu’s meme template which says, ‘Karwali bezzati?’

Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light, which won the Grand Prix, was the first time in 30 years that an Indian movie had competed at the Cannes Film Festival’s main competition.
Directed by Payal Kapadia, All We Imagine As Light features Chhaya Kadam, Divya Prabha, and Kani Kusruti. It’s a story about the friendship between three women who move to Mumbai from other parts of India. Many important personalities, like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, congratulated Payal Kapadia on her Cannes victory.
