WhatsApp Payments in India work via the UPI service and soon it could allow you to make regular bill payments from the app itself.
The messaging app is now free to offer its UPI service to all users
WhatsApp has offered mobile payments via UPI in India for sometime now but the platform recently got the nod to officially launch in the country. And soon, this could mean that WhatsApp will support payments for other services like power and even your mobile recharges. UPI has become extremely popular in the country, mostly because of the convenience of making payments digitally and doing it in a secure manner.
WhatsApp wants to tap into that traction and give people more reasons to stay on the app for a longer time. The feature is yet to hit the beta stage and has been spotted in an APK breakdown of WhatsApp that suggests the official roll out is not far away.
WhatsApp Bill Payment Support: Why It Could Be Big
WhatsApp is a multi-faceted platform that nowadays lets you make video calls, create events, have group meetings for work and generate AI images too. If you are in India, the messaging app also lets you make payments via UPI which is why bringing bill payments is the next logical step for the company.
You have relied on a multitude of apps for payments over the years but for a country with over 400 million WhatsApp users, the appeal of staying within the app for payments could be a good deal for WhatsApp and Meta as well.
The prospect of paying your power, gas, mobile or even water bill will surely work in its favour and it will be intriguing to see how people decide to rely on the messaging app for these features and more.
